The International Mountain Society for Range Management is holding a Summer Field Tour in Norris, Montana. Spend a day exploring southwest Montana and a day learning at Montana State University’s Red Bluff Research Ranch. Learn about the unique history of southwest Montana, explore the ecology and rangelands of the region, and discuss the challenges and opportunities managing sheep and cattle in the area. Topics will include mixed species grazing, wildlife conflict reduction, designing a 12-month grazing season, and understanding and manipulating grazing behavior.
Friday July 19 will be a day of recreation and exploration in Southwest Montana, options include; fishing, floating or swiming in the Madison River, hiking the Tobacco Root Mountains or exploring 19th century mining towns and ruins. Saturday July 20 will be a technical tour at Montana State University Red Bluff Research Ranch to learn about the unique history of southwest Montana, the ecology and rangelands of the region and discuss managing a 12-month grazing season.
Camping at Trapper Springs east of Norris, MT in Bear Trap Caynon will be available Thursday July 18 – Sunday July 21, spots are limited.
