Orchard Gardens Neighborhood Farm and Community Garden was created in 2005 in partnership with Homeword at the affordable housing complex in the Orchard Homes neighborhood, a neighborhood rich in agricultural history. In the original plans for Orchard Gardens, a parking lot was planned where the garden and farm now grow. Homeword took into account the agricultural history of the neighborhood, and saw the opportunity to create a sustainable food system onsite. They opted to build a parking garage under the main apartment building and asked Garden City Harvest to come in and build a farm. Now a lush 1.5 acres grows each season. The bike path borders one side, North Reserve borders the other.
Each of Garden City Harvest's 10 community gardens provides participants with a garden plot, tools, water, manure, straw, compost, and educational resources to help them grow their own food. With a little bit of patience and a lot of persistence, gardening means self-sufficiency, pride, and the taste of a homegrown tomato.
