Missoula

Back to the Mother Ferments is a small-batch, from-scratch fermentation company rooted in sustainability and intention. We source our ingredients as local, organic, and fair-trade as we can get them, because what we put into our food—and what we put back into the world—matters.

As proud members of Bayern’s EcoLeague, we’re able to keep our footprint light by giving new life to bottles that would otherwise end up in Montana's waste streams. Our landfill is our responsibility. For the first five years of our operation, our cardboard cases were exclusively collected and reclaimed from local waste streams, with the Good Food Store in Missoula, MT being our biggest supporter in that endeavor. Today, we work with all our direct sales accounts to reclaim as much cardboard as we can for reuse. These practices help us stay aligned with what we value most: sustainability, circular systems, and mindful impact.
Our kombucha, kimchi, and sauerkraut are crafted by hand in Missoula—alive, vibrant, and full of natural probiotics. They offer a gentle daily detox and a clean source of B vitamins to support your gut, mood, and overall vitality.
Always remember to plant good seeds, keep your feet to the Earth, ferment your food, and love your mother.
