SUMMARY:Master Gardener Volunteer Certification Fall Course
DESCRIPTION:Interested in Becoming a Master Gardener Volunteer?\nTo qualify\, you must: \nAttend all classes ( may miss one!)\nPass the final exam with a score of 80% or higher.\nComplete 20 hours of volunteer service with in 1 year.\nPay $250 fee (includes the Master Gardener manual and all class supplies)\nSign Master Gardener Volunteer Commitment \nCommunity service hours in horticulture related activities\, events\, or programs are required by all program participants to receive their Master Gardener Certification. Students must fulfill a minimum volunteer commitment of 20 hours within one year of completing a course. Examples of service to Missoula County can include\, staffing a mobile diagnostic lab\, working a Saturday at the Clarkfork Market answering gardening questions\, helping out your local neighborhood with a beautification project\, working in the new Rocky Mountain Gardens\, or help out with office needs for the county Hort agent. \nKeeping your Certification Active \nIn order to be certified and maintain good standing as a Master Gardener\, participants agree to complete a minimum of 20 hours of volunteer service and 4 hours of continued education per year. Missoula County opportunities include: working in a community garden\, giving gardening presentations at schools and to civic groups\, manning Info-Booths\, telephone and office work\, researching and writing grants\, fair judging\, fund raising\, land research\, and other opportunities as they present themselves. \nThe Montana Master Gardener Program serves as an education and volunteer service organization. The program’s purpose is to provide technical assistance and unbiased\, research-based information in consumer horticulture to people in all Montana communities through qualified volunteers. Through the Master Gardener program we empower individuals with sound horticultural practices that minimize negative impacts on the environment. The program is based on a philosophy of shared ownership. Your team provides the Love in Action! \nYour team will craft approximately 3 or more quarts of fresh\, healthy\, delicious soups for the local food banks- a real and meaningful impact you can all be proud of together. Cultivating Connections is asking for a $250 donation per group to help them cover the costs of ingredients\, packaging and labels\, and kitchen expenses. Popcorn and hot/cold beverages included in your FREE registration. \nMOVIE TITLE: “Grounded In Family: a film highlighting agricultural stress and resiliency in Montana”\nLogline\, Synopsis\, and Discussion \nFILM LOGLINE\nGrounded in Family tells the story of the Wolery Family who own a multi-generational farm in Rudyard\, Montana and balance the stressors of working on a farm with the importance of keeping family safe and granting the next generation the choice to move on or stay with agriculture. \nSYNOPSIS\nGrounded in Family follows a farm family in Rudyard\, Montana as they combat the everyday stress of the agricultural lifestyle through collaborative work. The Wolery family unpacks the tensions of living on a multi-generational farm and the expectations they have for the generations to follow. With each familial role comes the pressure of exploring their place on the farm. The father works the farm full-time and helps to keep the family farm thriving. The mother manages her career off the farm while also working on the farm\, and the children learn farming skills and face the choice of either continuing the legacy of the farm or embracing a different career path. This tension of balancing career\, family relationships\, external stressors\, and the arduous nature of farm work are sources of both joy and stress. \nThe parents do what they can to keep the weight of farming off their children’s backs\, and unfortunately it still spills over because the children are raised on a farm and have worked on the farm all their lives. To combat the anxieties of keeping the children safe\, the Wolery Farm emphasizes the importance of working together and moving past the stressors that are outside of their control. They maintain their resilience through family\, communication\, a strong business model\, and neighborly connections. With their commitment to farming and to the generations of family that preceded them\, the stress seems worth the reward. They posit that we are not alone in stress as many farmers feel\, because the people surrounding us have more similar issues to ours than we sometimes presume.
