SUMMARY:Book Launch- Living Roots: The Promise of Perennial Foods
DESCRIPTION:The Living Roots: The Promise of Perennial Foods book will launch on March 3rd\, 2026. Co-edited by author Liz Carlisle and Aubrey Streit Krug\, Director of The Land Institute’s Perennial Cultures Lab\, Living Roots makes the case for putting perennial foods at the center of our farms and our plates to add flavor and nutrients to our diets while reducing emissions and making our food system more resilient to climate change and economic uncertainty. \nThis book features contributions from several Land Institute scientists\, perennial grain research partners\, and members of the wider perennial agriculture network. It shares insights and perspectives from Indigenous scientists and community leaders working to restore buffalo prairies and the traditions of berry gathering; urban visionaries planting food forests; farmers planting fruit and nut trees between their crops and hedgerows at the edges of their fields; ranchers stewarding healthier grasslands by grazing livestock in patterns that mimic the behavior of native herbivores; and scientists and farmers who are developing perennial grains\, including sorghum and silphium. Living Roots is a vital introduction to this burgeoning movement and an invaluable resource for sustainable farming advocates and everyone who cares about the future of food.

SUMMARY:Annual Spring Landowner Vegetation Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Presentations include:\n2:00 PM:  Ylva Lekberg MPG Ranch Soil Ecologist\nThe Dirt on Weeds: How Invasive Plants Alter Soil Ecosystems\, Influcence Restoration & Impact Soil Health\nThis talk will focus on invasive plants\, soil health\, and commercial microbial inoculations. Ylva Lekberg grew up in Sweden and earned her Ph.D. at The Pennsylvania State University in Ecology in 2004. Ylka’s research focused on agroecology in subsistence farmers’ fields in Zimbabwe. After graduation\, she continued to explore the role of mycorrhizal fungi for plant thermal tolerance in Yellowstone National Parks and for coastal grasslands in Denmark. For the past 15 years\, she has focused on how intermountain invasive plants alter soil ecosystems and what the consequence of this may be for restoration. \n3:00 PM:  Bart Morris Oxbow Cattle Company Owner\nManaging Invasive Plants in Regenerative Ranching\nThis talk will focus on restoring ecosystem health to manage noxious weeds utilizing land use practices that allow recovery time for pastures\, increase biodiversity\, the use livestock to graze invasive species\, and the reduction of reliance on chemical or mechanical interventions. Bart Morris grew up in the Big Horn Basin of Wyoming\, where he spent much of his childhood working on ranches\, hunting\, and fishing. After a 16-year career working for Wyoming and Montana as a game warden and access coordinator\, Bart and his wife Wendy started Oxbow Cattle Company in 2014\, a ranch based on integrity\, regeneration\, and community. \nCOMPLIMENTARY DINNER at 4:00 PM (provided by Deer Lodge & North Powell CDs & Powell County Invasive Plants Office) \nAgricultural Plant Pest Control – 1 credit \nRegulatory Weed – 1 credit \nRight of Way Pest Control – 1 credit \nDealer – 1 credit \nPrivate Agricultural Pest Control – 1 credit

SUMMARY:Living Roots: The Promise of Perennial Foods
DESCRIPTION:Join in for a celebration of perennial foods\, and their deep roots in Western Montana! Josh Slotnick will moderate a conversation with Liz Carlisle\, Aubrey Streit Krug\, and Mariah Gladstone about their new book Living Roots: The Promise of Perennial Foods. Following the conversation\, copies of the book will be available for purchase and signing (courtesy of Fact & Fiction)\, and Mariah Gladstone will prepare a special tasting of perennial appetizers! \nAbout The Book:\nLiving Roots makes the case for putting perennial foods at the center of our farms and our plates\, to add flavor and nutrients to our diets while reducing emissions and making our food system more resilient to climate change and economic uncertainty. With contributions from James Beard Award-winning chefs\, Macarthur genius grant-winning scientists\, and a host of farmers who are leading the way on perennializing agriculture\, the book takes readers on a behind-the-scenes tour of the largest food forest in the United States\, the test plots developing the first commercial perennial grains\, and the vast grasslands where Indigenous communities are returning bison to their prairie homelands. In the process\, each contributor shares their unique story of learning with these long-lived plants about how to root deeper in the face of existential challenges\, speaking directly to readers charting their own path on a rapidly changing planet.
